Registration on the UAE’s Arabic Internet domain, .emarat (Dot emarat), will begin on May 30 for government entities.
The public will have to wait till December 11 for getting their names registered.
This was announced by Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director-General of the Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRA), at a joint press conference with Rod Beckstorm, CEO of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), on Wednesday.
As per the TRA’s roadmap for starting the domain, the government entities will be able to register their names in the first phase, which will continue up to June 16.
In the second phase, scheduled from September 27 to October 27, the entities and people will be allowed to register the trademarks and intellectual properties they own.
Generic names, of hotels and tourism agencies, can be registered in the third phase which will commence from November 14.
“If there are more applicants for any specific attractive domain names, we will select the winner through an open auction,” said Mohammed Gheyath, Executive Director, Technology Affairs of TRA.
The domain names will be allocated to the public on first-come-first-serve basis, he said.
Once the domain registration process becomes fully operational, people and entities across the world will be able to register their names on the Arabic domain. The TRA will seek the support of expert groups to verify the claims on trademarks and intellectual property rights.
