JOHANNESBURG: Finally, the World Cup got the injection of drama it needed. Switzerland, famed for Roger Federer but not football, upset Spain, the European champions. The 1-0 win was not beautiful. The Swiss spent much of the game frustrating successive waves of Spanish attacks. Gelson Fernandes’ scrappy goal, scored around prostrate Spanish defender Gerard Pique, wouldn’t have looked out of place at a mud-wrestling contest. But most fans — Spaniards excluded, of course — should celebrate. Because until now, this World Cup has been something of a disappointment, strangely anti-climactic.Beautiful goals like Siphiwe Tshabalala’s left-footed thunderbolt for South Africa or Maicon’s clever strike that opened Brazil’s account against North Korea have been rare. The scoring average is by far the lowest it has ever been since the World Cup expanded to 32 teams in 1998.Apart from Germany’s 4-0 demolition of Australia, there have been low-scoring affairs throughout.According to FIFA statistics, no team has managed more than 10 shots on target in their opening game — that honour belongs to only Brazil and Germany. Most have only had two or three.North Korea brought an element of mystique. So little is known about the Hermit Kingdom’s players that their opening game, won 2-1 by the Brazilians, was always going to be intriguing. But most of the other teams — the Swiss aside — have not sprung big surprises. There has been the odd memorable moment though, such as England keeper Robert Green’s embarrassing fumble that gifted the United States a 1-1 draw. That effort will inevitably go down as among the worst World Cup howlers ever.We might have Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Fernando Torres, and Kaka, but up till now the din of the vuvuzelas that reverberates around each stadium is the most talked about aspect of the extravaganza. The football is still lacking the spark that sets people’s hearts pumping. “The games haven’t been that exciting,” says Rooney. “I’m hoping it gets more exciting.” Aren’t we all?
